Our premium SpreadCharts Research has been providing alpha to our subscribers for years and has already undergone both minor and major changes multiple times. I’ve decided it’s time for it to evolve again. And it’s connected to my own personal trading approach.
The Quarterly macro outlooks will remain the cornerstone of our Research – no change there.
However, the regular analyses will change in two ways.
First of all, they will be published less frequently. I’ve noticed I feel pressured to comment on every move in the market. Instead of reacting flexibly, I’ve settled into a weekly publishing schedule that I think has become detrimental to the quality of our research.
The really good opportunities do not emerge every week. In fact, they are quite rare. To my credit, I happen to catch most of them, at least the major ones in indices, gold and energy. But these superior articles get drowned out in the noise of repetitive weekly commentaries. So my goal is less frequent updates with a focus on the very best opportunities and major turning points.
Second, I want to zoom out. This is connected to my own personal trading. A few years ago, when I started trading on my own again, I purposefully opened a cash account, not a margin account – simply so I wouldn’t be tempted to trade the complex options and futures strategies I used during my decade-long professional career in hedge funds and other asset management firms. I also promised myself not to buy single stocks and to stick to ETFs – to keep it simple and avoid stock picking, as I knew I didn’t have a real edge there. I have subsequently broken this promise on many occasions, but often with a good excuse, as Europeans can’t trade US ETFs and there are not always suitable alternatives in Europe.
But let’s get to the point. I want to declutter and focus on the big picture, because that’s what I know best. I will strictly avoid individual stocks, with sectors and, in rare cases, industries representing the most granular levels at which I trade. But most of the time, the major indices and commodity groups will be my playing field. Moreover, I want to extend my trading horizon. I’ve never been an investor, but I want to try this game. Or at least shift from swing to position trading. To track my new journey, I opened a new account and moved 90% of my funds into it.
SpreadCharts Research will mainly follow this new global macro strategy. The positive is that this kind of research will be more appealing to a larger share of people and institutions that don’t trade as actively as I previously did. Another upside for you is that I will be more open in sharing details of my own process and positioning.
The only exception to the approach described above is my Bitcoin strategy. I will allocate the remaining 10% of my funds to it. It is a fully systematic trading strategy built on a Bitcoin ETF and ETF options. It is quite ironic, given my well-known contempt for Bitcoin. While I hold no crypto myself, the reason for actively trading it via an ETF is simple – it pays. In fact, it’s become my most successful strategy. And my track record speaks for itself. I turned bearish in July 2025 above $120k and kept shorting it all the way down.
Then I turned bullish at the beginning of July and picked Bitcoin as one of the top opportunities for the 3rd quarter in the Quarterly macro outlook. I rode it all the way to $82k. Then I started shorting again in late October and early November at $84k and $81k, as disclosed to premium users and later on our X channel. You can see it visualized below:
Therefore, I will cover Bitcoin in our SpreadCharts Research and keep disclosing position changes in this strategy, which I think is quite a valuable bonus. Of course, there is no guarantee it will keep working so well in the future, but that’s the risk with every strategy.
